Here come the Loggerheads
Rare daytime hatching draws crowd
      Kirsten Dahlen says she's been watching turtles hatch since she was 8 years old, and a daytime hatching is a rarity. Asmall crowd gathered Friday behind Calle Hermosa on Pensacola Beach to watch the progression as the sand boiled to reveal over 98 tiny loggerhead hatchlings coming toward the light.

Gowens park dedicated on beach
     Glenn Gowens, left, and Joanne Faddis pose for pictures in front of the newly dedicated Harry G. Gowens Memorial Park on Aug. 24. Gowens and Faddis are the offspring of the park's namesake, a beach resident that started the community's first elementary school in his own home.

Warren is new leader of BPO Elks
      Michael Warren of the Pensacola Beach Benevolent and Protective Order of Elk's Lodge No. 497 was installed as the new leader of the Northwest District of the Florida State Elks Association at the Order's Grand Lodge Convention in Charlotte, NC this past June.

      This weekend we will observe Labor Day. The word "labor" can be interpreted in many ways. It may be "hard labor" such as construction, etc.; or "labor" just before the birth of a baby; or it may be mental exertion, especially when difficult or exhausting. Unless we over do it, labor can be a very satisfying thing in our lives.

Jamaican Fest is this weekend
      Get ready for fun in the sun with reggae flair this weekend at Portofino Boardwalk on Pensacola Beach. The 2007 Jamaican Festival, taking place Friday, Aug. 31 through Sunday, Sept. 2, will feature five different bands on two stages, a bathtub race and a bikini contest.
