Gulf Breeze family installs hurricane shutters with My Safe Home funds
      The State of Florida is actively giving away money for private home hurricane mitigation and at least one local resident is making sure he doesn't miss out. Tony Basel is one of thousands of Floridians to participate in the pilot version of the $250 million My Safe Florida Home Program. According to the program's website, www.mysafelfloridahome.

G B Library Book Club meets monthly
      The Gulf Breeze Library Book Club holds the meetings on third Wednesday of each month, at 5:30 pm at the Gulf Breeze Library, 1060 Shoreline Drive. The August book selection was "The Assistant" by Bernard Malamud. Book selections are both fiction and non-fiction, some are 'classics' and some are recent best sellers.

Citizens offers new 'wind-only' policy
      Citizens Property Insurance Corporation will begin offering a single policy to its wind-only customers on Aug. 1, a move officials say will simplify things for consumers. Policyholders who combine their plans may see annual premium savings of up to 10 percent, according to company representatives.

Scout troop rallies 'round the zoo
      In July, the final phase of the new Crocodile Monitor Exhibit at The ZOO was completed. The new exhibit is part of Dragon World, which includes Ivan, the Komodo Dragon, and will grow to display species of lizards including Gila Monsters.

The Pensacola Ladies Billfish Club is hooked on angling
      The Pensacola Ladies Billfish Club was organized in 1983 as a part of the Pensacola Big Games Fishing Club. Janet Briggs, the first Ladies Club president, is still an active member and is an accomplished fisherman. Janet, a Registered Nurse, is the Manager of Ambulatory Surgery at the Gulf Breeze Hospital.

Heron Oak Artists
      Heron Oak Artists have found a home to display their art. Their new abode is the Gulf Winds Center at 1300 Shoreline Drive at the corner of Shoreline and Daniel Drive. The Gulf Winds Center has graciously agreed to allow their public areas to be used as gallery space for Heron Oak Artists.

      The City of Gulf Breeze is going to provide a picnic for the families of deployed service men and women on September 29 at Shoreline South from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They are looking for ideas, volunteers, etc. to help with the picnic.

Makenna Faircloth is 'kid of the week'
      Makenna Faircloth, the Kid of the Week, is the daughter of Les and Sherri Faircloth of Gulf Breeze. She was born in Texas and moved to Gulf Breeze at the age of 5 1/2 years. She will be entering 3rd grade in August at Gulf Breeze Elementary School and her brother, Austin, will be entering the 6th grade at Gulf Breeze Middle School.

New Harvard study suggests 33 percent of participants would not evacuate for hurricane
      An increased number of residents of Southern coastal towns have said they would ignore hurricane evacuation orders if a storm threatened their community, a study released in July revealed. In the poll, by the Harvard School of Public Health, 33 percent of participants would not evacuate, compared to 25 percent of participants in the 2006 survey.
