9s in title game, 7s lose 11-inning marathon in opener

      The Gulf Breeze 6-year-old All Stars won three consecutive games Sunday to win the Dizzy Dean state tournament at Shoreline Park. Gulf Breeze eliminated the Pinellas Park Predators 25-10 early Sunday morning, then defeated previously unbeaten Pinellas Park All Stars 23-8 and 17-13 to earn a berth into the Dizzy Dean World Series, which starts July 19 at McDonough, Ga.

Heading to Alabama
      Maggie Rodgers, a rising sophomore at Gulf Breeze High, will compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Development Program's Region III team today through Sunday at a camp in Montevallo, Ala. Rodgers was one of only 18 players (and the only one from the Panhandle) to make the state's ODP team for players born in 1992.

Jersey retired
      Emily Hodgson (center) poses with parents Nan and Larry Hodgson during Senior Night for the Lady Dolphin softball team in 2005. A member of the Lady Dolphin varsity softball team for three years, Hodgson died June 28 from complications from a June 10 brain aneurysm. She was 20 years old.
