Brown requests additional $25 K homestead exemption for seniors
      As the property tax debate rages in Tallahassee, Santa Rosa County Commissioners may consider a property tax break for seniors as 2007 progresses. On Monday, April 10, county's property appraiser, Greg Brown, spoke to commissioners on behalf of the county's 2,351 lowincome seniors. Brown proposed a resolution that would give the area's seniors an additional property tax break.

Alligator captured in Gulf
      In early April, Deputies responded to Gulf Blvd. in Navarre in reference to a complaint of an alligator being on the beach. When deputies arrived, the gator went for a swim in the Gulf of Mexico. At approximately 3 p.m. on the same date, Sgt. Church votes unanimously to sell Benson Building
      Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church gave its leadership a thumbs up last Tuesday to sell the Benson Building on Highway 98 left to the church upon the death of City Founder Eloise Benson. After an hour-long charge conference held by the church to decide the future of the building, the church council voted to sell the property.

City seeks irrigation compromise with Baptist
      After last week's City Council Executive meeting, staff was directed to work out a compromise with the expanded Baptist Hospital property including the Andrews Institute. Andrews had requested sod installation before their grand opening, and irrigation stains removed from the brick wall north of the complex.

Vandegrifft faces new charges
Park charges dropped
      A man arrested for allegedly soliciting a young boy at a park last fall caught a break from the state attorney's office, but was recently arrested on several other sex charges along with his wife. Thomas Vandegrifft, a registered sex on offender, was arrested in October of 2006 after being identified by a family who claimed Vandegrifft had propositioned their 4-year-old son at a park in Navarre.

GB Overpass to get facelift
      Several Gulf Breeze Chamber of Commerce board members want to see the Gulf Breeze High School (GBHS) pedestrian overpass changed from an eyesore into an asset. "Right now we are looking to find out how much money and how long it would take to paint it," says Nevin Shaffer. The proponents of the overhaul must work through a few levels of bureaucracy, but remain committed to the project.

Eroding Dead Man's Island may get help
      Dead Man's Island may soon get a much-needed facelift. The small landform is located in Pensacola bay, just northwest of Highpoint Drive in Gulf Breeze Proper and is the victim of constant erosion. Gulf Breeze City Hall officials are working closely with state environment officials to rebuild the historical landmark.

Commissioners disagree on Courthouse site
      Will Santa Rosa residents serve their jury duty and file marriage licenses in Avalon or East Milton? That's the question County Commissioners are working to answer - hopefully without throwing their budget out of whack. Government officials say a new courthouse is expected to last for the next 50 to 70 years and would most likely be very expensive.
