Academy awards finally over
      Well, the Academy Awards are over, and we can go back to being normal for another year. I saw most of the movies nominated on airplanes. It was a low year if you ask me, but there were a few bright spots. "Bubba" Forrest Whitaker deserved his "best actor" statue for his role in the Last King of Scotland; he scared me more than Idi did while he was one of the world's most brutal dictators.

Slime-tastic!
      Last Thursday, cable channel Nickelodeon scheduled its tractor trailer to stop on its way to the Kids Choice Awards, bringing slime to area kids on Pensacola Beach. The event featured the "Pick Boy" from U-Pick Live, and several lucky kids were plucked from the audience to participate in slimy fun contests.

SRIA discusses hotel room owner stay
      Santa Rosa Island Authority (SRIA) officials held a March 7 workshop to discuss the effects of a proposed ordinance amending the time a hotel room owner can stay in his or her room. Currently, the ordinance states "the owner shall not reside in the unit for more than two weeks in any calendar year." The amendment would extend that stay to 16 weeks.

Kaboom 2007 brings fireworks back to Pensacola Beach
      Pensacola Beach community leaders are determined to bring fireworks back to the beach for the Fourth of July, and they are looking for sponsorships to help make it happen. "Kaboom 2007" will be a fireworks extravaganza to celebrate the country's birth and the summer's biggest holiday, according to Nan Harper, project coordinator.

Value each minute, hour, month, year
      During the night of March 10-11, some of us were painfully aware that we lost one hour of our lives. Our computers magically took us from 2 to 3 a.m. The culprit: Daylight Saving Time! Hopefully, we will still be around when that hour is returned to us in the fall.
