      College football season. I would like to congratulate the Florida Gators, but I just can't. I don't care if they are from Florida and I should pull for them, why I'd rather slap a hungry lion than ever "root" for a Gator. You got to give a man his loyalties. I bleed FSU Garnet and Gold.

Boy Scouts pitch in to rebuild dunes near Ft. Pickens
      Some undeveloped areas of Santa Rosa Island now resemble the Bonneville Salt Flats - an expansive white plane devoid of the towering sand dunes that made the area famous. The hurricane seasons of 2004 and 2005 nearly leveled many of the residential and natural structures that once dominated the island's horizon.

Climate experts disagree about global warming consequences
      Last week a young woman, knowledgeable and passionate, sat in my office and spoke of the effects global warming was having on our world. The online Wikipedia Encyclopedia defined global warming as the "observed increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation into the future.

Upcoming band convention means free concerts on Pensacola Beach
National band convention begins Feb. 28 at Hilton Garden Inn
      Free concerts, camaraderie, and great band music will be the focus of the 29th annual Association of Concert Bands convention on Pensacola Beach February 28 through March 4. This year's convention is hosted by the Pensacola Civic Band and will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn, 12 Via de Luna Drive.

Gulf Islands National Seashore recruiting lifeguards
      Gulf Islands National Seashore is recruiting lifeguards for its program in both the Florida (Gulf Breeze) and Mississippi (Ocean Springs) Districts . Superintendent Jerry Eubanks said The Park plans to fill three seasonal lifeguard positions for the Perdido Key Area in Florida and three for West Ship Island in Mississippi.

Plans for constructing Gulf Pier restaurant hit snag
      Chris Cadenhead of Sunset Holding told Santa Rosa Island Authorities Wednesday that he's a great pier operator, but doesn't have much experience running restaurants. That's why he's taking the advice of experiences restaurateurs who say giving 10 percent of his gross sales won't work, even though he won the contract based on his asset to the SRIA.

New marina planned on Pensacola Beach
      Philip Napier, spokesperson for Prom Queen, LLC, got conceptual approval from the Santa Rosa Island Authority to construct a marina at the site of the former Cocoanuts by the Bay restaurant site. Napier represents Prom Queen, LLC, and they plan to get approval to expand the existing marina lease from 54 slips to accommodate 74 to 80 slips handling 35- to 50-foot vessels.

'First shot' party marks Fort Pickens' role in the Civil War
      The shot heard 'round the world may have occurred in Fort Sumter, N.C. on April 14, 1861 to launch the Civil War but there was fighting at Fort Pickens before that, historians say. In "Barrancas: The First Shots Fired in the Rebellion," Walter Giersbach writes that on January 8, 1861, United States Army guards repelled a group of men intending to take Fort Barrancas in Pensacola Harbor.
