Seashore begins prescribed burn ops.
      Favorable weather conditions allowed workers to perform a prescribed burn on 276 acres in Gulf Islands National Seashore Naval Live Oaks (NLO) last weekend. Groups from as far away at the Great Smokey Mountains assisted in the burn designed to reduce the hazard of wildfires resulting from combustible underbrush and dead trees.

Commissioners discuss reducing number of garbage services
      Santa Rosa County Commissioners would like to see less trash and more community involvement in 2007. At their committee meeting Jan. 22 commissioners discussed a handful of initiatives designed to improve the quality of life for Santa Rosans and streamline refuse services.

Primary vote approaches for Florida Rep. Seat 3 special election
      There are only a few more days left for early voting for a special election for Florida State Representative Seat 3 vacated by Holly Benson. Early voting ends Saturday, Feb. 3 and the special primary election is set for Tuesday, Feb. 6. Hours for early voting are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Elections Office, 6495 Caroline St., Milton or the South Service Center, 5841 Gulf Breeze Pkwy.

Mediacom plans rate hike in April
Cable company officials say increase has nothing to do with dispute with Sinclair
      Some Mediacom customers can expect an increase in rates in the near future. According to the area cable provider's officials, some cost adjustments are anticipated to hit billing statements this April. "Our operating costs continue to rise, especially in programming, employee benefits, technical improvements, etc.," said Director of Governmental Affairs Barbara Bonowicz.
