City Councilwoman Beverly Zimmern was named the Rotary Citizen of the Year at the Dec. 19 breakfast meeting, and she was the only person in the room surprised by the announcement.

“Beverly is an independent thinking lady and she represents the city very well at statewide transportation committee meetings and on the local level,” says Mayor Lane Gilchrist. “I thought it was very appropriate that she receive the honor. I knew she has always been very involved, but I was surprised to hear the list of all that she has done in addition to her many efforts on behalf of the city. Her list of involvements was long and distinguished.”

Citizen of the Year Committee chair Bill Delavan announced Zimmern’s award, and listed her many accomplishments which included extensive PTA and schools activities, volunteer work with Temple Beth El and professional associations.

“It truly is humbling to have been bestowed with this honor by such a distinguished and long serving civic organization,” Zimmern emoted. “My respect for Rotary and its members runs deep. I use the ‘4 - Way Test’ as a guidepost for my decision-making process, both as a councilwoman and in my personal life. My heart is filled with such joy and surprise over this, words can not do justice in describing how I feel! I love this city and I consider it a privilege to work for its citizens.”

Councilmember Zimmern has been a member of the Gulf Breeze City Council since August 2001, and her term runs until December 2008. She is also a board member of the Gulf Breeze Capital Trust Agency, the South Santa Rosa Utility Board. She serves on the board of Project Advisory Group for the Pensacola Bay Bridge Replacement, City of Gulf Breeze Foundation Advisory Board and Partnership for a Healthy Community.

She has served actively on such committees and boards as FLC Transportation and Urban Administration Committee, the FTP 2025 Steering Committee, Gulf Breeze Traffic Task Force and the South End Tomorrow Advisory Group.

Zimmern was named 2000 - 2001 Volunteer of the Year for Gulf Breeze High School. She has been a Gulf Breeze resident for over 25 years. She is married to William A. Zimmern, Jr, M.D. and has two grown sons, Benjamin and Joshua.

Zimmern received her B.S., Health Education/Community Health, from the University of West Florida and is a Licensed Practical Nurse actively working in the community.
