A holiday card to area civic and social clubs

All of you civic and social clubs in the community have been working very hard. You have been doing good things; making money for charitable causes and giving of yourselves to needy causes. Why do you do this? Literature, religions and fairy tales all tell us that kindness will change our lives for the better. Consider Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Studies have indicated that “The Scrooge Effect” is not a myth and that altruistic people tend to be happier and more satisfied with their lives.

By committing a deed of kindness, we are saying, “Here’s something I can do to change the world.” Many times anger and apathy dissolve by doing something positive for others and are replaced by a strong sense of purpose. One way to experience kindness as a natural high rather than drudgery is to become a part of a civic or social club as you have done. You have formed ties with others who wish to do good deeds as you do. Your clubs do a great job for the community. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Betty Driftwood Garden Club

The Driftwood Garden Club held their annual Christmas party at the home of Mona and Gerry Brown in Gulf Breeze. The house was decorated complete with lights, a beautiful golden Christmas tree and many other reminders of the joyful season. The scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and meal was catered by Aegean Breeze. Mona was an excellent hostess and she had great help. She was assisted by Sara Whitesell, Fran Sansing, Joan Daniel and Dot Jordan. The ladies had arranged several tables for a seated dinner. The beautiful mild weather allowed for some tables to be outside on the patio as well as the long handsome table in the dining room and in the family room. President, Jeanne Merchant, helped greet the members of the club and their husbands for this annual event.

Gulf Coast Friends

Gulf Coast Friends celebrated the holidays with Thursday luncheon at New World Landing. Corry Station Performing Arts sailors sang Christmas songs and their drill team performed. Friday night over 90 members gathered at the Pensacola Yacht Club for a wonderful evening of dining and dancing. A Touch of Gray provided the music and received a very enthusiastic response from the members. Joan Strange, Publicity Chairman.

Holley Navarre Senior Association

On Saturday afternoon the Holley Navarre Senior Association had its annual Christmas Party. Members prepared a sumptuous feast of traditional Christmas dishes and desserts.

The Holley Navarre Middle School Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Trevino provided the entertainment. The chorus sang a number of Christmas favorites, both traditional and new. Several of the children sang solos as well.

The seniors were delighted with the incredible talent and poise exhibited by the Chorus. Santa also put in an appearance to listen to Christmas wishes and to pose for pictures with the ladies. He filled his sack with gifts brought by the seniors for the children of Favor House.

The remainder of the afternoon was filled with Christmas carols led by Vera Jordan and Francis Elliott, and dancing to the music of Harvey Craft, “The One man Band.” Harvey has been playing across the country since the swing era, and is still swinging. It was a great celebration, and the seniors want to thank all of those who contributed their time and talents to make it so.

The Senior Association is open to men and women over 50 years of age. Please contact the center at 936-1644 for information.
