After Christmas, the work of helping others begins
When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry To release the prisoners, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among people, To make music in the heart. Soon many of the Christmas decorations will come down and be stored away until next year. We’ll have sung the Christmas carols, and all the stores will put away Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” “The Grinch That Stole Christmas,” will be shelved among our DVDs, and we’ll store our Christmas cards received until we find the courage to throw them away. This poem above, by Howard Thurman, however, suggests Christmas is not over, but it is then that “The work of Christmas begins.” I trust those of us of the Christian Faith will enjoy all the festivities associated with Christmas, but will then remember that the work of Christmas continues throughout the year. If we can remember that, we will certainly make a difference as we touch the lives of many people. A very Merry Christmas to all. |
