Be productive, not destructive
From the Editor's Desk
B.J. Davis
the time to read this.

On the beach the other day, I noticed a billboard advertisement for a jet ski that traveled at 74 mph. Why on earth would anyone want to travel that fast on the equivalent of a water motorcycle? Are we truly in a mindset that we are such in a need for speed that we would purposely jeopardize our own lives? It's not just watercraft either. We drive fast, we talk fast, and yet, our lives seem to move even faster. They say, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." Possibly so, as we've completely forgotten about "Taking time to smell the roses." Now, our roses are mobile phones, Blackberries and Tivo. How many devices must we create to create time? It's a vicious cycle we have fallen into, and I applaud those who are actually taking
Well, it's impossible to create time. We're slaves to the fact that there are not enough hours in the day, yet by digitally filming our favorite show, we can spend more time on our cell phones. Or, better yet, we let our calls go to voicemail because we're too busy at the moment to answer. Will it take any less time to finally sit down and watch your show or listen to your voicemail than call the caller back? The circle again rears its ugly head.

I'm not saying don't be productive; I'm saying don't be destructive. There are physiological and emotional reasons we require a certain number of hours of sleep at night as well as having vacation days. It's safe to occasionally turn off a cell phone during dinner and especially during a movie.

I was always told growing up to not "burn my candle at both ends." There's no use spreading yourself so thin you lose focus on the important things in life. What are those important things in life? Slow down, and you just might find out.
