Skin cancer screenings created awareness, helped save lives

Submitted Photo Dermatologist Dr. Amy Watson examines skin cancer screening participant at the 2006 Mole Patrol.
The Pensacola Bay Area's first Mole Patrol, a skin cancer screening program sponsored by Baptist Health Care, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute and AAAAuto Club South, yielded 235 screenings. Fourteen percent of individuals screened were recommended for biopsies, and seven basal cell carcinomas and two squamous cell carcinomas were diagnosed.

Mole Patrol took place during the Blue Angels' Friday and Saturday air shows at Pensacola Beach.

"So many participants thanked us for being on the beach-accessible and convenient to them," said Donna S. Campbell, director of cancer services for Baptist Health Care. "There were also many participants that drove out just for the screenings."

Hosting the event Blue Angel weekend garnered much of the event's success. By administering the event at the beach, participants received a thorough skin screening without having to schedule an appointment and disrobe. Participants received free sunscreen and additional skin care resources.
