Baptist Health Care employees support American Heart Association

Submitted Photo Baptist Health Care Vice President of Operations Mark Faulkner, Administrator Bob Murphy and Vice President of Surgical and Ambulatory Services David Wildebrandt fulfilled their end of the bargain of dying their hair and wearing these shirts if 1,000 shirts were sold.
Baptist Health Care employees raised $2,584 for the American Heart Association in recognition of National Heart Month in February.

Employees participated in three fundraisers: sales of Tshirts, teddy bears and candy grams. T-shirts, designed by Baptist Health Care Art Director Craig Granger, were sold in support of the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Day, which was held Feb. 3 to promote awareness of heart disease as the leading cause of death among U.S. women. To encourage employees to purchase the shirts, three Baptist Hospital executives agreed to color their hair red if 1,000 shirts were sold. Employees met the challenge, and Administrator Bob Murphy, Vice President of Operations Mark Faulkner and Vice President of Surgical and Ambulatory Services David Wildebrandt fulfilled their end of the bargain.

"This is one way the leaders at Baptist could visibly show support for this initiative, be supportive of our employees and have a little fun at the same time," said Murphy. "At Baptist, we value teamwork and stewardship in our day-to-day operations, and these activities surrounding National Heart Month signify those values."

In celebration of Valentine's Day, Baptist Hospital staff sold plush teddy bears and candy grams.

"Baptist has been a tremendous supporter of the AHA in the past, and we believe that the dollars donated by our staff truly make a difference in the fight against heart disease," Murphy said.

Driftwood Garden Club makes field trip

The Driftwood Garden Club learned about container gardening on their field trip to the Garden Gate Nursery. Dot Morgan, program chairman, introduced Emily Peterson, the owner of the cozy, inviting little nursery on Highway. 98.

Emily showed off clever containers and demonstrated how to fill them, starting with the soil and how to mix it. She worked with herbs that she passed around for the ladies to feel and smell, then she planted them and gave instructions for watering. Her audience learned that the most important thing was to start by carefully matching the container and plant along with the conditions under which it would grow. Emily was informal in her instructions and the ladies felt free to ask her many questions before the end of the visit.

The club adjourned at Barnhill's Restaurant for lunch.
