High heels and iron staircases don't mix

Bette Boyle Bette Boyle While compiling a list of interesting things to do when entertaining guests new to our area, I mentioned the Pensacola Lighthouse. With 170 cast iron steps, this is something of interest to folks who have not been there. And, of course, it reminded me of my own past experience with a winding, cast iron staircase. It may not have been 170 steps high, but it seemed so to me...

I was part of a group of girls doing fashion shows for the American Heart Association, which were usually held in a very nice hotel. One year we had a new director who had come from the world of little theatre, and had her own ideas.

This fashion show was to be held in a large hospital with a beautiful glass-enclosed atrium and a high, winding, black cast iron staircase rising in the center of the treeand greeneryfilled space.

We models practiced our entrances and exits on this staircase many times during the week before the event.

Descending the narrow steps in very high heels proved to be rather difficult. Miss Parish, the director, was quite insistent that we not look down as we walked. "Look around, girls, and smile!" she admonished.

The day of the show, six of us lined up at the top step to begin the descent. Miss Parish called out in a hopeful and encouraging tone that old show-biz adage, "Okay, girls, break a leg!"

Fortunately, no one did. But the hospital administration banned any future fashion shows from the stairway. Although a hospital does seem a convenient place to break a leg, doesn't it?

Gulf Breeze is sometimes considered a "bedroom" community, but it is first class as far as medical facilities are concerned. Recently, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations has awarded its "Primary Stroke Care Center" designation to Gulf Breeze Hospital as well as to Baptist Hospital.

Both have developed a system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. We seniors know that stroke is one of our most common health concerns, and they can be taken care of right here in Gulf Breeze. With strokes, that old saying "time is of the essence" is certainly true.

***** If you recall the Summer High School On Stage Workshops at PJC from summers past, you will be eagerly looking forward to this year's production of "Singin' in the Rain." This is the 1985 Broadway musical version of the well-known film starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds.

The best of recent high school grads will star in what should be an amazing production. Gavin Parmley and Chelsea Reynolds, both Gulf Breeze High grads and well known to local theatergoers, have the leading roles. PJC sets are always outstanding, but I hear they will have actual rain onstage. (Think I should bring an umbrella?)

Shows will be in Pensacola Junior College's Ashmore Auditorium on Friday and Saturday, July 28 and 29, and August 4 and 5tat 7:30 p.m. The matinees will be performed on Sunday, July 3, and August 6 at 2:30 p.m. You know I'll be there.

Call 484-1847 for information and reservations. Tickets are $10.
