Commissioner's Report

Transportation issues addressed

John Broxson John Broxson This has been a very busy time for me over the last several weeks as a result of several matters that came to my attention as well as the entire Board of County Commissioners. The following report briefly outlines some of the more important concerns challenges and opportunities may be of interest to you.

The board requested the approval of the Florida Department of Transportation for County Incentive Grant Program Agreements for the following projects.

1. Northbound Left Turn Lane at Soundside Drive and U. S. 98

2. Southbound Right Turn Lane at Coral Street and U. S. 98

3. Northbound Left Turn Lane at Nantahala Beach Road & U.S. 98

4. Southbound Right Turn Lane at Bayshore Road and U.S.98

5. Southbound Right Turn Lane at C. R. 399 and U.S. 98

6. Turn Lane on Pace Lane and U.S. 90 and Update Markings on Pace Lane and Keyser Lane. These improvements are essential for greater efficiency and safety when entering or exiting U.S. 98 at the listed locations. There is an excellent likelihood that these projects will be funded very soon.

A Navarre Beach Pet Designated Area has been requested by interested citizens throughout South Santa Rosa County. With proper regulations and maintenance, such an area could be approved in the near future.

Santa Rosa County will enter into a contract with Beck Disaster Recovery Services, Inc. for Disaster Debris Planning and Support Management Services. As the hurricane season approaches it is very important that our Public Works Department be mobilized immediately to remove storm debris from our roads and streets.

In several meetings and in conjunction with the Gulf Breeze Chamber of Commerce, I urged State insurance officials to make windstorm insurance coverage available as soon as possible. Many local businesses in the 32563 and 32566 zip codes have no windstorm coverage. At my invitation and that of the Chamber, state officials came to Gulf Breeze to help us to solve the problem. Some help has arrived! Florida CFO Tom Gallagher announced on Friday that a new insurance company is now available for commercial property owners' applications. Although the number of policies available is limited and costs will vary, some progress is being made. Join me in continuing our plea to Legislators, the Governor, Congress and our state-wide elected officials for help.

The City of Gulf Breeze received confirmation that a CDGB Grant has been approved to install sewer to replace septic tanks in a portion of the city. Santa Rosa County was pleased to play an administrative role in the application and the receipt of this commitment.
