Pictures are worth a thousand words
Chuck Randle

It has been said that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” I thought of that the other day as I was riding along with my three-year old greatgrandson. He was talking about what three year olds talk about this time of year toys at Christmas. I said something to the effect that Christmas would soon be here and he would see what toys he would receive. And he said, “If Christmas is here, where is the snow?” Here is a little boy who has never seen snow, yet has seen pictures of snow, along with Santa and his reindeer, and associates that with Christmas. Pictures have been utilized ever since early inhabitants wrote and drew pictures on the walls of their caves. How easy it is to look at a picture and determine what is happening. The picture of the infant Jesus, with Mother and Father, and animals gathered around, sends a message that would take hundreds of words to describe. Art and music can make inroads to our hearts and minds in ways that words could never compete. For that reason, we set up nativity sets, and sing the old familiar carols that have the ability to take us back in time to earlier experiences that have impacted our lives. And so I say to my great grandson that snow is not required for Christmas its what is in our hearts that make the difference (words that a three-year old probably could not grasp, but the seed is planted and perhaps one day those same words will be repeated to his children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren).
