Cleopatra made her grand entrance at the zoo on Thursday, April 14. Her mate, Kiboko, will join her next week.

Cleopatra, named appropriately after the Queen of the Nile, and Kiboko, whose name stands for hippo in Swahili, came to the Zoo at GB from Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay.

"They’re coming to a really good place," said Busch Gardens Veterinarian Genny D u m o n -ceaux. "They will have a good time here."

They are a breeding pair and have one calf, which is at Busch Gardens.

Dawn and Ken Hargrove prepare meals and beverages to enjoy and share during the GBUMC celebration. Nearly 2,000 members and guests were served during the community event.

The zoo is hoping there will be more babies to c o m e . "There is a possibility she’s pregnant," said Doug Kemper, Executive Director of the Zoo at GB. "She’s showing some of the signs."

The 18 year-old-hippo weighs in at a whopping 3,100 pounds, although male Nile hippos can weigh up to 8,000 pounds.

Hippo-potamuses are the second largest land mammal.

As a treat to visitors, beginning Saturday, April 23, the train will have a five-minute whistle-stop at the hippo exhibit, where train riders can get off the train and onto an observation deck to see the hippos up-close.

The new Nile Hippo exhibit is part of the first phase of the zoo’s new African Adventure Exhibit, which will include an African Village, the "African Queen" boat ride around Gorilla and Chimpanzee Islands, a new Leopard exhibit, and other new attractions.

For more information, call The Zoo at Gulf Breeze at 932-2229.

Covenant Hospice garage sale collects $395K

The 11th Annual Garage Sale was a huge success...raising $395,000 for patients and families. The proceeds from the sale will help us to care for bereaved families and children, provide Chaplin services and to care for patients who could not otherwise afford hospice care.
